Irrational Numbers

An Irrational number is a real number that cannot be represented in the form of ${\frac {p}{q}}$ where p and q are integers and q≠0. Irrational means not having a ratio.

Examples of irrational number : ${\sqrt {2}}$ , ${\sqrt {3}}$ , ${\sqrt {5}}$ , pi (π = 3.14159265...)

Properties of Irrational Numbers

1. Addition of an irrational number and a rational number gives an irrational number. Example : ${\sqrt {2}}$ + 2 = 2+${\sqrt {2}}$
2. Multiplication of two irrational numbers may be rational. Example : ${\sqrt {2}}$ X ${\sqrt {2}}$ = 2
3. Product of an Irrational number multiplied by a non-zero rational number is an irrational number. Example : ${\sqrt {3}}$ X 7= 7${\sqrt {3}}$
