An Irrational number is a real number that cannot be represented in the form of where p and q are integers and q≠0. Irrational means not having a ratio.

Examples of irrational number : , , , pi (π = 3.14159265...)

Properties of Irrational Numbers

  1. Addition of an irrational number and a rational number gives an irrational number. Example : + 2 = 2+
  2. Multiplication of two irrational numbers may be rational. Example : X = 2
  3. Product of an Irrational number multiplied by a non-zero rational number is an irrational number. Example : X 7= 7
